PARKINSON PAPERS

The Parkinson Collection is a large body of correspondence, clippings, family charts and obituaries collected by John W. Parkinson and donated to the Newark Public Library on 30 November 1956 by his wife, Ruth, after his death.

The collection was received by the library in open cartons with little or no organization. Mrs. Paul Scheffler set to work organizing it for the next 14 years, while Mary Pierce was Head Librarian, and did not finish it. [Mrs. Scheffler had served Licking County at the Historical Society, Probate Court, Chamber of Commerce, and as genealogy consultant for the library from 1953 to 1963]. She welcomed the help of Mr. M. E. Barton of Painsville, Ohio, who was familiar with Parkinson genealogy. Mr. Barton stated that Ruth "inferred that all the papers of any value had been turned over to the library, and that a few boxes of miscellaneous clippings about Parkinsons were all that had been given to the Historical Society."

Further assistance in sorting the collection was obtained from Mrs. Carl Main, who was in charge of the Genealogical Library at Western Reserve.*

*[All the information above is taken from a letter written by Mrs. Paul Scheffler, State Chairman, American Heritage, Ohio Society DAR, to Dorothy Billett, dated 22 September 1977, and is located in File #1 of the collection].

The material in the collection is broad in scope, encompassing Parkinson families and related lines from many states and from Europe. There is an accompanying collection of OBITUARIES that covers 1927 to 1953, taken from several newspapers. These include many clippings on social issues of the 1930's and 1940's, especially World War II. Sadly, many of these topical clippings have vanished.

In lieu of thorough indexing of the collection, which has not yet been done, but with the intention of making it more accessible to researchers, all the folders have been numbered and their headings indexed. This was accomplished in 1999. The following index represents only the folder headings, not all the contents. The numbers after the headings refer to folder numbers.

We require your signature and ID to use this material in the library
